Shining a Light: Trinity Buoy Wharf residency 2024/2025
I’m interested in the idea that by taking the time to slowly describe someone in stitch, you convey your admiration. Celebrating people who make things by the investment of time in making the work is a quiet, thoughtful act of care and value
Emily Jo Gibbs has established an international reputation for her hand-stitched portraits and still lifes, observing the quiet beauty of the overlooked. Gently advocating the value of making by creating work that celebrates the skill, dexterity and the creative problem solving of people who make things.
I’m excited to be part of the Trinity Buoy Wharf community to make a body of work which shines a light on the expertise here and makes audiences curious about what people do at the Wharf. The resulting body of work informed by interactions with the community over the period of the residency will create a physical visual diary, comprised of stitched works and drawings. During the period of the residency, I will be delivering a series of workshops and there will be an exhibition at the end to coincide with London Craft Week 2025
Shining a light on people and places that are overlooked, through the act of making is an important part of my practice. The project might look at Artist and Makers within the studios, Students or Tutors from the teaching settings, those renovating SS Robin or even interesting people from the archives. For me one of the key outcomes is an expression of the feeling that making things is important and the people that makes things are important too.
